Professional Practices

Over 15 years of teaching experience, in India and internationally. Guest Faculty courses in Design, Illustration, Typography and Professional Practices at India’s foremost Design schools. Guest Faculty in Denmark. Workshops in London, Mexico, Japan and several across India. Type Camp India. Typerventions. Style of teaching: Spirited, participatory hands-on, encouraging, all-heart, balance of academic rigour and imaginative play.

Teaching Type

Over years of teaching design, various formats of workshops and conducting my own experiments, I’ve been developing methods to enable students to— what I’m known to call— ‘Make Friends with Type’. My approach is to simplify, introduce play, bodywork, humour and high energy assignments, yet to eventually lay a good foundation for further learning or specialisation. The following are examples of key modules that can be combined based on specific requirements, learning objectives and budgets.

Calligraphy & Type Drawing Practice

An introduction to tools, including making your own tools. Practicing basic calligraphy to get a feel for letterforms, rhythm, stroke order, posture, and patience!

Water & Light Lettering

Once armed with some basic calligraphy practice, the group is in a good position to try it in a different scale. In fact, they’re usually a bit stiff, aching to move their bodies, and need some loosening up after being exposed to intimidating calligraphy techniques!

Hand Lettering & Drop Caps

For a more advanced group or longer workshop, an introduction to drawing letterforms by hand is possible in many ways. We have a few different assignment-formats to achieve this, of which drawing Drop-Caps on glass is a notably popular and fun one.

Typerventions

#Typerventions (type + interventions) began as a public art initiative in 2011, as a fun way to combine modular type, simple everyday materials and the city’s public spaces, to spell short, relevant messages or words that could spark conversation, wonder and a positive sense of community. The unprecedented success of these and enthusiasm from both audiences and volunteers, led to the creation of a version for education. Explore more about Typerventions here.
